Bristol City player ratings v Ipswich Town: 'Sloppy' 6s scored but duo impress in five-goal thriller

Ipswich Town 3-2 Bristol City

Bristol City surrendered a 2-1 lead as they were defeated 3-2 by promotion-chasing Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Anis Mehmeti's goal gave the Robins a lead midway through the second half, before Ali Al-Hamadi equalised for the hosts.

Tommy Conway restored City's lead, but goals from Conor Chaplin and Leif Davis guided Ipswich to victory, as Al-Hamadi missed a penalty in between the two strikes.

The result sees Liam Manning's side remain in 13th place after a fourth consecutive defeat. The Robins made a positive start to the match and were able to impose themselves on the tie in the opening 10 minutes.

Harry Cornick began to gain joy down the right flank, his early cross narrowly evaded Mehmeti before a clipped ball into the area was gathered at the second attempt by Vaclav Hladky.

Despite Ipswich’s quiet start, they showed their attacking threat when a quick turnover set Kieffer Moore through on goal, but the striker’s effort was pushed out by Max O’Leary.

The hosts had a brief spell of domination midway through the half, during which Chaplin struck the post following a whipped-in corner.

But City responded well once more and went close through a Nahki Wells header after positive play from Cornick again.

The visitors carved out a great chance moments before the half-time whistle when some high pressing from Jason Knight forced an error from Luke Woolfenden.

Wells played the loose ball back to Knight, who swivelled and struck at goal, but his effort was deflected behind.

The Robins began the second half in a similar fashion to the first and looked the most likely to open the scoring.

Manning’s side got their reward for their positive play when Mehmeti cut inside Axel Tuanzebe in the box and fired past Hladky with the help of a deflection off Woolfenden, following a good pass from Pring.

The Albanian sprung into life after the goal and almost forged an opening for Ross McCrorie moments later.

It was all City for a few minutes and Wells carved the home defence open before missing a guilt-edged chance on the hour mark.

He beat Woolfenden and Cameron Burgess before crashing a left-footed effort off the crossbar from six yards out.

Manning’s side were made to rue the missed opportunity when the hosts broke up the other end and Wes Burns ran through down the right.

Burns picked out Davis whose effort was helped on its way by Al-Hamadi who equalised.

Mehmeti looked the most likely to force his side back into the game and forced an outstanding stop from Hladky minutes after when his curling effort was pushing out.

Conway was introduced for Wells with a quarter of an hour to play and made an instant impact.

Mark Sykes chased a loose ball and fired a cross into the area, where Conway was perfectly placed to head over the Ipswich keeper and in for 2-1.

But, that lead lasted just three minutes. Davis’ crossed free-kick from the left found Chaplin at the front post, who guided the pacey ball into the net off O’Leary.

As the home crowd began to get up, Cam Pring was deemed to have brought down Burns in the area and the referee pointed to the spot.

Al-Hamadi stepped up and saw his effort saved comfortably by O’Leary who guessed the right way, but the action wasn’t finished there.

In the 89th minute, Davis was unleashed down the left flank. The no.3 progressed into the area and fired an effort across goal, Dickie made a sprawling effort to clear away but could only guide the ball into his own net.

Jack Taylor struck the post and Jeremy Sarmiento went close to adding a fourth deep into stoppage time, as the tiring visitors ran out of steam.
