Bristol City player ratings, heroes and villains: Martin, Semenyo and Weimann delight in Hull mauling

The Robins saved the best till last as they delivered the performance of the season in their final home fixture

Bristol City ended their home campaign on a high as they swept aside Hull City 5-0 at Ashton Gate to send their supporters home happy.

The Robins’ formidable attacking trio of Andi Weimann, Antoine Semenyo and Chris Martin were all on target in what was a straightforward win for the hosts with Martin and Weimann scoring in either half.

With the victory, City have now secured back-to-back wins for the first time this season, who are now guaranteed to finish higher than last season’s 19th place.

City were on the front foot immediately with Sean McLoughlin having to clear off the line as Chris Martin’s backwards header almost caught out the onrushing Nathan Baxter.

An early goal came for the hosts with Semenyo and Weimann linking up for the umpteenth time this season. The pair exchanged a neat one-two before Semenyo played in Weimann to lob a shot over the goalkeeper.

Hull did respond to going behind, firstly Tom Eaves smacked a shot from the far-side which Bentley had to tip over before being forced to save Keane Lewis-Potter’s point-blank header.

After surviving two Hull scarves, a second goal followed after the half-hour mark with Semenyo on target. The forward was played in and he swept a low shot into the corner of the goal.

Hull then picked the ball out of the net for a third time a minute later as Semenyo turned provider again, putting the ball on a plate to Martin to tap home from close range.

City continued to dominate and went further in front as Martin dispossessed the last defender and slotted past the goalkeeper clinically in a one-on-one.

Ten minutes from time Weimann added another with a pick of the lot. He paused for a moment before chipping the ball over the rooted Baxter. It would act as his last act of the match as he would receive a round of applause as he was replaced by Tommy Conway for the last notable act of the game.

Heroes

Antoine Semenyo: Clinical with his finish and showed a good footballing brain for his assists to Martin and Weimann. One of his best performances in a Robins shirt.

Chris Martin: Two-goal hero with two different kinds of finishes. A tap-in from Semenyo and then a one-on-one which he always looked like winning.

Andi Weimann: Two goals for the Austrian who is only a goal off of Tammy Abraham’s tally of 23 goals during a successful loan spell here. All the motivation now for their final game against Huddersfield Town.

Villains

Nathan Baxter: The Tigers goalkeeper did not look assured whatsoever. He was let off the hook with Martin’s header and positioned himself wrongly for Weimann’s opening goal. A difficult day for him conceding four goals.

Alfie Jones: Bristolian Alfie Jones did not have the best of returns to his hometown. The defender gave away the ball a few times and endured a difficult time against City’s attack.

Most of Hull’s players: It has to be said that was quite a poor performance from a side that weren’t too far off City in the league table. Eaves, substituted at half-time and Lewis-Potter perhaps the only players to come out of the game with any credit.
