Bristol City 2-2 West Bromwich Albion: Player ratings & man of the match as Robins surrender more points

Bristol City concede points from a winning position again as West Brom twice strike back to earn a draw

Bristol City twice surrendered a lead as they drew 2-2 with West Bromwich Albion in a frustrating afternoon at Ashton Gate Stadium.

Adam Reach scored in the 92nd minute to salvage a point for the Baggies after Andreas Weimann had put the Robins in front following Nahki Well’s opening goal before Karlan Grant equalised with a penalty.

City are non-movers in the Championship standings, remaining in 18th position, but have played a few games more now than the likes of Cardiff City and Swansea City who are above them.

Nigel Pearson’s men had the better of the first-half and had the more testing opportunities in front of goal.

City’s game plan was affected early on when Antoine Semenyo, who had pulled up with cramp last match, had to leave the pitch due to injury with Wells replacing him.

Wells inspired his side to seize the initiative and break the deadlock in what was an eventful opening first half hour. Andreas Weimann slipped the ball across the box to the forward to poke the ball home from an unmarked position.

Moments later, Robert Atkinson was picked out from a free-kick and he forced Sam Johnstone to scramble with a troubling header.

Another opportunity then presented itself to Chris Martin who from Matty James’ corner-kick, could only lift his effort over the bar in the final effort of the half.

Ten minutes in the second period, a blistering counter-attack almost resulted in a penalty with Weimann and Wells working well to get into the box but after the latter went down, a penalty wasn’t rewarded.

Instead referee Leigh Doughty would present the chance to West Brom to equalise as he judged Daniel Bentley to have fouled Kyle Bartley for what was the ninth penalty City have conceded all season. Grant sent him the other way with a confident penalty.

Another claim for a spot kick came from the hosts as Chris Martin flicked the ball onto a Baggies defender but Leigh Doughty waved away the protests.

Five minutes remaining, the hosts went back in front. A free-kick was touched on by Atkinson into the path of Weimann who laced home a volley.

In the second minute of additional time, substitute Adam Reach rescued a point for the away side as he pounced on a defensive error, prodding home from a couple of yards out.

The heroes

- Andreas Weimann: Anticipated the pass well to create a crossing position to cross into Wells for the goal. Scored City’s second goal with what should have been the match winner with a well-taken volley. Another goal and another assist for the Player of the Year. No one comes close.

- Matty James: Acted as a second captain by leading the outfield players and getting them organised. Almost scored but for the side netting.

- Nahki Wells: By all accounts has been a good professional and was well within his right to be frustrated given the lack of opportunities. Took his opportunity today with a striker’s finish.

The villains

- Daniel Bentley: Conceded a penalty after fouling Kyle Bartley in a congested penalty box. Didn’t make a notable save throughout the match.

- Leigh Doughty: A few penalty appeals for City that were waved away. There has only been one penalty awarded to the Robins this season and that was in November.

- Callum Robinson: Feigned an injury when Cam Pring kicked the ball out of play. Set up the equaliser as he continues to be a thorn in City’s side.
