The curtain will come down on the 2022/23 EFL Championship season this weekend with the final promotion play-off and relegation places decided.

Many clubs, including Bristol City, already know they will be a second tier side next season regardless and attention will be turning to the summer transfer window. The Robins have been strongly linked with the signing of an Aberdeen midfielder but the CEO of the Scottish Club has recently made some comments that might be of interest to those following the situation.

Elsewhere across the division, a Burnley forward reportedly wants to remain at Manchester United next season after spending time on loan at Old Trafford from the Clarets and a former Reading and Leeds United boss is in line for a new job. Here are the latest EFL Championship transfer news stories on Thursday, May 4:

Aberdeen CEO talks budget amid Bristol City midfielder links

Bristol City have been strongly linked with a summer move for Aberdeen midfielder Ross McCrorie with talk over a £2 million bid having been made. However, the situation could very well change by the end of the Scottish season depending on certain factors including where the Dons finish.

If the North East club finishes third and Celtic also win the Scottish Cup then they would be guaranteed European group stage football next season, either in the Europa League or Europa Conference League. Securing that would land them a serious cash windfall but could also impact their decision to sell current players with a larger than usual squad likely required for the rigours of playing Thursday and Sunday.

Aberdeen CEO Alan Burrows has been discussing the club’s budget for next season under head coach Barry Robson and has said: “I don’t think Europe will dictate Barry’s budget but it will influence it. There’s a realisation that if you’re playing in Europe long-term and the fixtures are tight in regards to midweek-Sunday, there is an expectation more provision will be required. If we can achieve our objectives it will allow us to invest in the football side which can only be good for the short to medium-term.”

Burnley forward ‘wants to stay’ at Man Utd

Manchester United have yet to open talks with Wout Weghorst staying at Old Trafford beyond this summer when his loan from Burnley expires, according to the Telegraph. However, it is claimed that the Dutch forward does want to stay at Old Trafford even with the Clarets having already secured promotion to the Premier League this season.

Former Reading boss in line for new role

Former Reading and Leeds United manager Brian McDermott, a well known figure across the EFL, looks set to be confirmed as the new Director of Football at Scottish Premiership side Hibs. The 62-year old, a Championship winner with the Royals in 2012, is expected to have his appointment at Easter Road confirmed today.
