The midfielder gave an update on his contract situation

Matty James has insisted that he would love to stay at Bristol City beyond the expiry of his contract next summer, but admitted there has been no contact from the club as of yet.

The midfielder was brought to the Robins by Nigel Pearson in June 2021, and has been a vital cog in City's midfield over recent seasons.

The 32-year-old has seven months left on his current deal, and while talks are yet to begin about extending his stay at BS3, James is calm about the situation.

“There's been no contact from Bristol City as of yet, but I'm just focusing on my own individual performances for myself and the team," he said.

"It’s up to the club then if they want to come with a contract offer or not, I've got to make sure that I play as well as I possibly can for the club in the time that here but also in case of the possibility that I need to open the door in the summer.

"I'm pretty relaxed about it, I've been in this situation before, it's just about staying fit, staying in the team, making sure I give everything for the new manager and sacrificing what I can for the team."

James has featured 89 times for City to date, and has contributed six goals and assists from the defensive midfield position.

The experienced no.6 has captained the Robins on several occasions and his consistent displays in a City shirt have made him one of the side's most important assets over the last two years.

A former Premier League winner with Leicester City, James admitted that it's his dream to return to the topflight, and preferably with Bristol City.

He continued: “I would love to stay and to help this club move forward. I feel like there’s some unfinished business in terms of where the club want to go. I signed just over two years ago now and the ambition was to move further up the table and get to the promise-land of the Premier league.

"I feel that the club is ready to do something and I'd love to be around in the coming years to help with that. But, the ball's in their court."
