Latest Bristol planning: Bingo hall update, 10 apartments above Greggs, and new sauna & wellness centre
A huge new proposed bingo hall for more than 1,000 card-dabbers in South Bristol has taken a leap forward according to new plans recently submitted.
Each week Bristol City Council receives dozens of planning applications seeking permission for a whole range of developments. Over the past seven days, those applications also included 10 studio flats above Greggs in Broadmead and a sauna and wellness centre in Bedminster.
Here’s this week’s round-up of notable planning applications submitted to the council. Every week dozens are validated by the local authority and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals. All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public.
Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications — whether in support or objection. The majority of applications are decided by planning officers at the council under delegated powers. However, some will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees.
No dates have been set for when the planning applications below will be determined. They can be viewed by going to the planning portal on Bristol City Council’s website.
Clickety-click: A bingo hall that closed at Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Knowle in October has unveiled detailed plans for its move to Bedminster.
Club 3000 shut because of structural issues with the car park and ahead of the mall’s demolition to be replaced with a new area called Redcatch Quarter, which includes hundreds of homes. It has now submitted a planning application to turn a vacant site, formerly used by Vanbase in Hartcliffe Way, into its grand new venue for up to 1,200 punters.
In planning documents, Club 3000’s agents said: “The redevelopment of the Broadwalk Shopping Centre does not include provision for the existing bingo club, creating a pressing need for a new location that can sustain this important social and recreational amenity.
“The proposed site has been carefully selected to provide a state-of-the-art facility that meets modern standards while remaining accessible to the community it serves.”
The proposals include a large ground floor space below a mezzanine with VIP seating, and 144 car parking spaces would be provided.
The bingo hall would be open 10am to midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Friday and Saturday.
Club 3000 has 34,000 members in Bristol, with 3,000 actively playing bingo at Broadwalk before its closure.
Apartments above Greggs: Ten studio flats would be created across two floors above Greggs in Broadmead.
Developers are asking the council for prior approval ahead of submitting a full planning application and argue that it should be given the green light under permitted development rights.
In planning documents, the agents said: “The two upper floors provide large open-plan spaces with welfare facilities, previously occupied by long-term tenant Carphone Warehouse.”
Detailed plans would include replacement windows to improve insulation.
South Bristol sauna
An industrial unit in Willway Street, Bedminster, would be converted into a sauna and wellness centre.
The property, The Old Gaol, has been empty since 2016 having been used previously by a business for plastic coating and welding.
The applicants, Hotbox Social, want to establish a “premium wellness centre that provides sauna and cold plunge pool facilities”.
In planning documents, agents said: “These therapies are designed to promote relaxation, accelerate recovery, and support overall wellbeing, catering to individuals seeking a revitalising and transformative experience.
“Sauna sessions will feature aromatherapy and traditional ceremonies such as Aufguss. The upper floor space will be used as a studio for further activities such as yoga and pilates.”
There would also be a coffee shop for customers.
The centre would open at 6am daily and close at 9pm Monday to Thursday, 10pm Friday and Saturday, and 7pm Sunday.
