Burnley are 13 points clear at the top of the table, with the Blades currently in second spot and four points ahead of an in-form Boro side. The Clarets are best placed for automatic promotion as the battle for second place between Sheffield United and Middlesbrough looks to rumble on into April and May.

Scott has been strongly linked with a move to the top flight, with Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson predicting he will play for England in the future. It is also reported a potential move could involve a loan switch back to City for another season.

The youngster netted in Saturday’s 2-0 home win over Blackpool and Pearson said after the game it would cost more than £25m for Scott to leave the club.

He said: “So far the speculation about Alex Scott has been cooked up by journalists and agents. We have not received one firm offer. If we do, it will need be more than £25 million in today’s market.

“I believe Alex will play for England one day. I thought that when I first saw him in a training session and nothing since has changed my mind.

“He is a level-headed lad, who won’t be affected by reports in the press. He will play for a top club one day and it’s just a question of when.”
