It’s nearly Shrove Tuesday: The best pancakes in Bristol including Coppa Club, Foliage and The Crafty Egg

From American style to traditional French crepes, or indulgent fluffy stacks to a Sri Lankan take, Bristolians are spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing somewhere to gobble up their pancakes on Shrove Tuesday (1st March).

Can’t be bothered to spend your evening flipping your own DIY creations and would rather head out to enjoy the Pancake Day tradition? Luckily for you, there are plenty of options across Bristol to choose from so we’ve rounded up some of the best for you.

We’re not just talking about traditional sugar and lemon or a bit of golden syrup here. Instead, you can expect lashings of maple syrup, all sorts of unique toppings and different types of pancake, too.

Got yourself a sweet tooth but don’t fancy the standard toppings? The Crafty Egg pancakes are delicious and come in perfect little stacks with toppings such as banana, nutella and peanut butter or, if you’re more of a savoury person, how about something like crispy bacon? Essentially, the choice is yours from nutella, peanut butter, bacon, banana and berries.

If you are after something a little bit special and want to treat yourself this Pancake Day, head to Foliage Cafe in Clifton. Not only is it a lovely place to while away a few hours, but there are some wonderful pancake options to choose from too. Vegan and gluten free, they are fluffy and full of flavour, plus they even come complete with flowers on top (we told you they were special). You can choose from berry pancakes or peach pancakes.

Perhaps you’re bored of opting for the traditional take on Shrove Tuesday and would like to steer clear of sugar and lemon? Sri Lankan restaurant The Coconut Tree could be a brilliant option as you can try one of their Hoppers, a bowl-shaped coconut milk pancake served with coconut sambol, seeni sambol (caramelised onions with a hint of cinnamon) and lunu miris (Sri Lankan salsa). Sounds pretty delicious, right?

Tuck into some pancakes while you put your washing on at the renowned laundrette cafe At the Well on Cheltenham Road. Go for something a bit different to the usual DIY pancakes and opt for their Transatlantic Pancakes. Perfectly thick and fluffy, the American pancakes come topped with scrambled eggs, buttery mushrooms, streaky bacon all finished with a liberal dousing of maple syrup. If you’re more of a blueberry person, you won’t be disappointed either.

It probably wouldn’t be able to be a Bristol food round-up without mention of this famous staple. Boston Tea Party is a brilliant choice for Shrove Tuesday and they are renowned for their tasty takes on American pancakes. Choose from either smoked back bacon, maple syrup and maple butter or for those of you who like it sweet, try them with blueberry compote, vanilla Greek yoghurt and maple butter.

Okay, so this one will have to wait till the weekend so you might have to save up your Shrove Tuesday treat for a brunch date on Saturday but you won’t be disappointed by the options on offer at Quay Street Diner. The all-day diner was voted Travellers Choice by Trip Advisor last year and it’s easy to see why so why not head out to see what all the fuss is about? Think perfect big stacks, doused in maple syrup and complete with traditional toppings such as berries or bacon.

You’ll find some pretty tasty pancakes on Aqua’s brunch menu and you’ve got two restaurants to choose from between Whiteladies Road and Welsh Back. You can expect to have your fluffy stack with blueberries, strawberries, mascarpone, and maple syrup. Sounds pretty great, hey?

The wonderful and iconic bike shop and cafe on Bristol’s harbourside is a brilliant choice for those of you able to head out for breakfast on Shrove Tuesday. Their breakfast menu includes stacks of buttermilk pancakes which are all gluten free as well, so perfect for those of you with extra dietary needs (we don’t want anyone to miss out here!). Choose from streaky bacon and golden syrup, berry compote, greek yoghurt and golden syrup, or nutella, banana and hazelnut.

Head to Cosy Club for your pancakes on Tuesday, Grade II listed Neo-Palladian style building on Corn Street. Not only is it a pretty place to while away a few hours, you’ll find buttermilk pancakes on the menu in stacks of either three or six with either smoked back streaky bacon, blueberries and maple syrup or berries, banana and Greek yoghurt. If this video on their Instagram is anything to go by, they are getting serious about the upcoming Pancake Day this year.

Browns Brasserie and Bar is a classy spot in Bristol and one that you can always rely on to come up trumps with brunch and, in particular, with its pancake offerings. Another place that opts for the buttermilk variety and style, you can expect to find toppings such as Berries and Cherries Buttermilk Pancakes with Greek-style yoghurt or Smoked Pancetta Buttermilk Pancakes with maple syrup and salted-seed granola.

If you fancy really truly treating yourself this Pancake Day, take a trip out to one of Clifton Village’s newest and smartest arrivals. Coppa Club plays host to some incredibly tasty Buckwheat and Rye pancakes and you can choose from either ​​berries, granola, seeds, and coconut yoghurt or dry cured bacon, maple syrup and Netherend Farm butter.
