Bristol or Madrid? The city sizzles in 35C heat.

What Bristol looked like on the hottest day of the year so far

Bristol has been pictured sizzling on what is thought to be the hottest day of the year in the city so far.

An amber ‘extreme heat’ warning was sounded by the Met Office for England over the weekend, with residents urged to stay inside, stay hydrated and avoid travelling.

Despite this, plenty of people were pictured braving the heat in the city centre and Harbourside areas as temperatures hit 33C.

The streets were quieter than usual though, with many seeking refuge in shaded areas and flocking to cafes and shops with air con.

Elderly couple John and Carol told BristolWorld: “We came out for an early morning walk and it wasn’t so bad then, but it is really hot now, so we’re heading home to be on the safe side.”

But Matt, 34, said: “I don’t get what everyone’s so worried for, but then again I don’t mind the heat. As long as you’re careful and don’t take the mick, and go in the shade every now and then, you’re not going to get hurt.”

The heat could hit 41C elsewhere in the country, making it the hottest day for the UK on record, but it looks Bristol will dodge such high temperatures - for now.
