We visit the huge family-friendly pub near Bristol where dogs have their own menu including burgers

The Globe is a landmark pub on the road between Bristol and Bath

Woof! Hungry dogs visiting The Globe on the Bristol Road roundabout near Corston are particularly well looked after at this huge pub.

When you arrive, you see two blackboards. One has a cheery welcome from landlord Phil and his team, with the request to ‘please wait to be seated’.

The other is a smaller board with the ‘doggy menu’ - chicken £3, sausages £2.50, burger £2 and bacon £1.75 - with jars of dog biscuits and a barrel of water so owners can pour water into the metal bowls provided.

Originally built in the 17th-century, with one section added in the 1800s, The Globe is one of those roadside pubs everybody knows if they drive or take the bus (the stop is around the corner) to and from Bristol to Bath.

It’s a prominent building surrounded by rolling hills - and at the moment, there’s the Bath pumpkin patch nearby.

Now part of the Vintage Inns pub chain, it’s as much a restaurant as a pub, although there were a few drinkers in the bar, including a few people having a stiff drink after a funeral.

There is a huge restaurant area warmed by a central wood burner. Low ‘mind your head’ beams add plenty of character, as well as fat church candles.

The pub is already set for Christmas, with decorations up and twinkling baubles hanging from antlers and picture frames, next to blackboards advertising the festive meals (two courses £28.95, three for £31.95).

With old photographs of the area, comfortable leather armchairs and tartan carpet, the bar area is relaxing and relatively quiet away from the buzzy restaurant where options include steaks, burgers, pizzas, sandwiches and salads as well as classics such as fish and chips, hunter’s chicken schnitzel or beef and red wine lasagne.

As I settled down with my pint of Butcombe (£4.80), more muddy-pawed dogs arrived. Little did they know what treats were in store for them.

The Globe, Newton St Loe, BA2 9BB.
