Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and for many of us, the quest for the perfect present is far from finished.
We decided to visit Bristol’s Clifton Village and Clifton Arcade in search of the quirkiest and most unusual Valentine’s Day gifts.
From custom paintings to unusual chocolate flavours and clothing, here’s what we found when we visited the independent shops on Clifton Village and Clifton Arcade:
1. Village
At Village, they have an array of Valentine's Day cards ranging from £2.75 to £3. Staff recommended the “I [heart] Bristol” mugs (£15) and bath melts from The Somerset Toiletry Company (£2.50) as Valentine’s Day gifts.
2. Heron Books
For the book lover in your life, Heron Books gave us three recommendations for Valentine's Day: The Book of All Loves by Agustín Fernández Mallo (£10.99) an experimental novel with a series of essays exploring the different types of love which is officially published on Valentine's Day but is already available for sale; Briefly, A Delicious Life by Nell Stevens (£9.99), a love story between a ghost and writer George Sand; and Approaching Eye Level by Vivian Gornick (£9.99), a collection of essays set in New York about being alone without being lonely.
3. Huw Richards Evans
At Huw Richards Evans, the artist recommended getting a painting commission of their favourite place as an unusual Valentine’s Day gift. The smallest size cost just under £100.
4. Kumomo Store
At Kumomo Store, staff recommended the Kit Kat Special Assort (£29) which comes with 51 Kit Kats of five flavours, and the Kit Kat Variety Party Box (£39) which comes with 70 Kit Kats of 18 unique flavours (some not sold in the UK like sake and matcha), and the whisky and rum-flavoured Pocky tin boxes (£12) as unusual Valentine’s Day gifts.
