Chitra Tarling, the owner of the Independent Design Collective, said: “We were hit pretty badly. The financial crisis was announced around December/January 2023, and for the first six/seven months of last year, we were struggling to cover the bills, pay our staff, pay for the electricity, let alone everything else that comes on top of general life, buying food for your family and all of that. So this little dream has sort of been my passion ever since I was a little girl. So to let it go would have been a very hard decision for me. So we struggled through, we had unexpected bills that popped up and we had to borrow money, which I don’t like doing. But I’m hoping that this year will be a much better year after surviving Covid, after just about surviving the financial crisis. I’m hoping that this year will be a “normal” year, and we can just get back to selling local art and crafts to the general public."
