Players need to upload photos of the item to prove that they have found it

If you're looking for an activity to do on a cold rainy day, It’s A Scavenger Hunt! may be the game for you.

It's A Scavenger Hunt! is a scavenger hunt with a modern twist. Rather than collecting physical items, players need to upload photos of the item to prove that they have found it.

Players will also have to pick between two categories each round, and from there, they are given a choice of two clues for two different items which are revealed.

Each different game will offer different combinations. Teams are timed, and photos are verified by staff after the scavenger.

A 15-minute penalty is given for each photo deemed incorrect by the review staff. Teams are ranked against other teams based on a combination of the completion time and the total number of correct items found.

It’s A Scavenger Hunt! costs £16.96 from Eventbrite per team and only one smartphone device with a data connection is needed per team.

Since it’s a self-guided experience, It’s A Scavenger Hunt! can be played at any time on any day in any location for one year after purchasing the ticket, although players are encouraged to play during business hours since it is easier to find the items that way.

We decided to see whether the game was worth the investment on a cloudy and somewhat rainy Monday afternoon.

Once a team name is registered for the game, the players receive a printable team name bib stating the team name and number in an email.

The email also encourages "teams to dress in matching, perhaps hilarious, outfits” since "this will allow you to act silly in public while receiving sympathy and assistance from your fellow human beings!"

Being a solo team, I decided not to print out the bib and started the game around The Haymarket and Cabot Circus because I thought it would make it easier to find the items.

All the text is narrated by the in-app game master and also includes commentary introducing the categories and clues.

The first choice of category was "frightening" or "funny". I chose the latter which asked for a photo of the "team's goofiest faces and zaniest poses" which once taken, would be the background for the game's scavenger sack.

And so the quest for the first item began: a flower. I was able to find a fake rose in the Primark and the photo was added to my scavenger sack as I earned 2388 points. The next item was strings.

After venturing to Sparks (in the old M&S), I was able to find a straw hat with some string decorations in the Emmaus section. The strings sufficed to complete the quest.

The next quest was photographing someone mid-jump. After searching through the nearby Christmas Market (and getting distracted admiring the Ferris Wheel), I was glad the game allowed one "mulligan" where I could switch to the alternative clue for free. Any future skips would lead to a 15-minute penalty.

After taking a photo of someone wearing a hat (a selfie of myself) and a "lump of ice" at Tesco, the next item was "a sign with the word STOP".

After a while searching for a "stop" sign, I realised a bus stop would suffice, and there's room for creativity as the clues and item names don't necessarily have to be literal.

After returning to Sparks for the next few items, I questioned how much the images are verified since the game accepted a clock reading 10.45 for "a clock showing noon or midnight".

I completed the game at TK Maxx after failing to find two dice showing 1 (I could clearly remember where my dice were at home), accepting the 15-penalty, and taking a photo of myself with a toy guitar for "someone playing an instrument.

I completed the game within 90 minutes and scored 27,115, earning the 1786 rank. A 50% off offer is available for a rematch for returning teams. Overall, it was fun, especially when it came to moments where I would have to think of creative ways around the requested item and how to present it.

However, it is rather pricey if you want to venture alone but might be worthwhile if you venture as a team.

From hindsight, all the items that were requested at least in the round I played were items I had at home and could have therefore completed the game without leaving the house. This, however, could work as a bonding exercise for a family or household on a rainy day at home or in a shopping centre.
