The landlord has been there ten years and just signed up for another ten

The Victorians certainly knew how to build pubs to last and the Pied Horse in St George is a classic of its type.

A huge, symmetrical red-brick building with bow windows, ornate Bath stonework and high ceilings, this late Victorian pub on Summerhill Road is a beauty.

Inside, plenty of original features have been preserved in the L-shaped bar with its pool table, dartboard and central bar.

One wall is dedicated to record sleeves for 1980s pop and rock favourites, from Rainbow and Wham to Haircut 100 and Bucks Fizz.

Landlord Giorgio Di Meo has run the pub with wife Kimberly and their two young children since 2014.

It’s going so well that they’ve just signed on the dotted line for a further ten years - a rare good news story for local publicans at a challenging time for the industry.

“We like to think it’s popular here because it’s so inclusive and has a lovely down to earth nature,” says Giorgio, a popular character with a good line in banter for his loyal regulars.

“Every one is welcome from all generations and it’s just a really friendly and happy place.”

As well as offering a wide range of drinks at reasonable prices (my pint of Butcombe Rare Breed was only £3.50 and some of the lagers and cans of Natch were cheaper), this dog-friendly pub keeps things interesting for locals with events.

There’s a regular quiz night and a full programme for the month ahead. This Sunday (March 3), there’s a darts friendly match and on March 15 there’s karaoke with a St Patrick’s theme.

Giorgio says: “We find our karaoke nights and live music nights are popular, but to be honest it’s our clientele that make it what it is. We always say ‘without the customers, we’re not a pub’ - they really do make it.

“We’re constantly looking for ways to improve the place for everyone and hope that we can keep everybody happy. It’s a passion for us more than a job, so it’s something we’ve poured a lot of love and time in to over the years.”
