It took me precisely 20 minutes by bus from central Bristol to St Peter’s Church at Frampton Cotterell but it felt like stepping back in time as soon as I got off the Y1.

The handsome church was rebuilt by the Victorians but the beautiful tower dates from 1315 - four centuries before the adjacent Globe pub was built.

It’s a pretty and unspoilt part of the village and it’s situated on the beautiful Frome Valley Walkway, which links The Cotswold Way at Chipping Sodbury with Bristol - a 18-mile trek which makes The Globe a particularly welcome pitstop for thirsty walkers.

When it first opened, The Globe would have been one of the pubs where local men would come for a well-earned drink after a day of coal or iron mining. Their wives were most likely to have been working in one of the local hat-making factories that made this area world famous in the 19th century.

Now an independent freehouse - a rare thing indeed these days - The Globe has bags of original character with low beamed ceilings and old black and white photos of the village on exposed stone walls.

At one end is a large function room - it was packed on the day I visited due to a wake - and there is a large lawned garden with a children’s play area. The benches in the tranquil walled garden face the church and it’s a timeless view.

Inside, there is an L-shaped bar, dark wood furniture and red patterned carpets throughout. It’s comfortable, traditional and friendly.

Behind the bar, there are four real ales to choose from. I went for the St Austell Proper Job (£4.65 a pint) but could have happily plumped for the St Austell Tribute, Bristol Beer Factory Fly Casual or Fullers London Pride.

For cider drinkers, there’s Sheppy’s 200, Thatchers Dry and Black Rat.The pub serves food everyday and there is a Monday steak night which is apparently as popular as the Sunday roasts.

This month, there is a ridiculously good deal of two meals for £12, served Monday to Saturday from 12noon to 2pm. Dishes include ham, egg, chips and peas; handmade faggot with mash, gravy and peas; homemade cottage pie, vegetables and gravy; prawn jacket potato with Marie Rose sauce and salad, and mushroom stroganoff with rice and garlic bread.

Most people around me had ordered this unbeatable lunchtime deal and the food looked excellent - and they were generous portions, too.

A sign behind the bar at The Globe points to the pump clips for the beers ‘coming soon’ and they included the Uley Pig’s Ear - a rare appearance from this award-winning Cotswold beer and worthy of a return visit in itself.

What with that beer due on the pumps any day and the January lunch deal, I’m already planning to head back to this fantastic country pub that’s just 20 minutes from Cabot Circus.

It may be a short drive from the city but The Globe feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life and it's all the better for it.
