Most former pubs rarely return to their original state once they’ve been turned into another use but the Old Bank did exactly that a few years ago, much to the relief of the locals.

This Grade II-listed building on Keynsham’s High Street started life as a coaching inn but then spent many years as a bank.

A no-frills, one-room pub with a covered courtyard for the smokers at the back, the Old Bank’s walls are dotted with old pictures of Keynsham and a huge TV screen at the far end.

At a time when a trip to the pub can have a serious impact on your current account, the Old Bank is surprisingly kind on the wallet.

Being a free house means it can choose which beers and ciders it serves and keep prices as low as it can.

My perfectly kept pint of East Street Cream from Weston-super-Mare’s RCH Brewery was only £3.90. The other real ale on offer was Exeter Brewery’s Avocet Ale - a rare visitor to pubs in the Bristol and Bath area.

The barmaid told me that all pints were under £5 and she was clearly proud of the fact the Guinness was just £4.30. I know people who have paid twice that in other cities recently.

There are seven types of Thatchers cider on tap including Rascal and Stan’s Cheddar Valley. For lager fans, there’s Red Stripe, Moretti, Stella, Foster’s and Amstel. If shots are your thing, you can buy five for a tenner.

Although very much a proper drinkers’ pub, the Old Bank also serves cooked breakfasts and sandwiches. A small breakfast is £5.50, with a large one £7.

Visit with a serious appetite between 10am and 1pm Thursday to Saturday and you can attempt The Belly Buster - it costs £10 and you’ll be served a mountainous plate comprising three sausages, three bacon, three eggs, three hash browns, two black pudding, tomato, beans, mushrooms and fried bread.

With cooked breakfasts in the morning and live music and musical bingo on selected evenings, the Old Bank is certainly a pub that has the day covered.

And with prices like those, it’s also a banker when it comes to being a great value local boozer.
