Update on demolition of prominent Bristol 'eyesore' as new plans for site revealed

New plans have been revealed for the redevelopment of a derelict factory site in South Bristol ahead of demolition starting soon.

Sovereign Network Group (SNG) wants to knock down the prominent ‘eyesore’ on Bath Road in Brislington to build 91 homes in its place.

The developer’s new plan for the site opposite Arnos Court Park follows its previous 146-home planning application being refused in 2021 and dismissed on appeal the following year.

The new scheme will be 100% affordable, with a mix of social rent and shared ownership, according to local councillor Andrew Varney.

“In recent years, the site has become a prominent eyesore and has attracted anti-social behaviour including graffiti, litter and fly-tipping,” he said.

“Bristol City Council gave written approval on July 22 for SNG to proceed with demolition of the existing John Peer building.

“Preparatory works have now started with the main demolition due to start in late October/early November.

“As part of the works, the specialist contractor will erect hoarding on site to improve its security and appearance.”

The former Co-Op clothing and tailoring factory closed in 1980 and was later occupied by an office furniture retail business.

SNG, which acquired the site in 2016, is aiming to submit a planning application in early 2025.

A public consultation will run from Monday, September 30 to Monday, October 14 and there will also be a public drop-in exhibition on Wednesday, October 2 from 4-7pm at Arnos Manor Hotel.

From Monday, September 30, details of the proposals will be available online at www.sovereign.org.uk/developing-homes/bath-road.
