A new and improved app for renting e-scooters is expected to be rolled out in Bristol soon after Tier merged with another company.

The operator of the e-scooter trial in the West of England region has merged with Dott, a similar firm.

The merger of the two companies was announced in January earlier this year.

According to Bristol City Council bosses, a new app could lead to “improved performance”, especially as the number of riders appeared to fall since Tier took over the e-scooter contract in October last year.

Speaking to councillors on the economy and skills policy committee on July 29, Alex Hearn, director of economy of place, said: “Tier has recently been bought out by another company called Dott.

“We’re expecting to see a new app to improve performance.”

The council expected to receive £500,000 from Tier as part of the e-scooter trial, based on the number of riders forecast.

But so far, council bosses now predict they will receive just half of this, due to a “recent drop in ridership following the change in contractors”.

He added: “We budgeted half a million pounds. I believe that it’ll improve over the course of this financial year, but I don’t expect us to meet the full half a million.

“[Ridership] is improving across the region.”

After the meeting, Tier said “some changes” will be announced soon to services in Bristol and the wider region.

The company published details of the merger earlier this year in a press release.

These included that riders can continue to access Tier and Dott scooters through their respective apps “for now, with convergence possible in the future”.

Jessica Murphy, head of policy operations at Tier, said: “Following the announcement of a merger agreement between TIER and Dott, we are integrating the best elements from both companies to deliver the highest quality service to residents.

“This will include some changes to our services in the West of England, which will be announced soon.”
