Bristol traffic: Crash on M4 causes delays of up to 90 minutes and closes two lanes say National Highways

A multi-vehicle collision caused delays of up to 90 minutes on the M4 in Bristol after two lanes were forced to close.

A crash involving a number of vehicles is causing long delays on the M4 near Bristol today, Easter Monday. The incident occurred earlier today on the M4 eastbound between J20 (M5) and J19 (M32) in Bristol.

Police closed two lanes while the incident was dealt with, causing long delays of up to 90 minutes for many drivers. The road policing and road safety teams of Avon and Somerset police attended the scene along with South Western Ambulance Service.

Drivers were encouraged to take alternative routes for several hours while multiple vehicles were recovered from the road. The lanes reopened after the vehicles were cleared at around 12.30pm, but severe delays of up to 75 minutes remain while traffic volumes ease.

National Highways South West tweeted: “CLEARED: M4 eastbound from J22 (M49 PrinceofWalesBridge) to J19 (M32) Bristol. ALL LANES OPEN between J20 (M5) and J19 after earlier collision and vehicle recovery. SEVERE DELAYS of 75 MINUTES remain. It’ll take some time for these to ease due to current traffic volumes.”
