TikTok sensation Mimi Webb may have written her fair share of ‘break up’ songs - one EP was even called Seven Shades of Heartbreak - but she couldn’t wait to announce an engagement at her Bristol show.

Halfway through the set at a sold-out 02 Academy, the house lights went up and she walked to the front of the stage to reveal the news.

‘That’s the first time this has ever happened at one of my shows,’ beamed Mimi, clearly flattered that two fans in the audience had chosen this gig as the place to propose, much to the joy of the crowd. It’s this connection with her fans that has made the 22-year-old singer from Kent such a huge star.

Within minutes of the show starting, she was telling her fans how she couldn’t believe that this time last year she was playing to a much smaller Bristol crowd when she appeared at the Trinity Centre.

But then since that memorable gig, Mimi has surpassed 730 million global streams, toured across the world, made a big impression in America and performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Ellen.

With 1.4m followers on TikTok, it’s no surprise that Mimi’s return Bristol gig was a complete sell-out with many ticketless fans hanging around outside in case anybody had a spare one.

It might have been a school night but that didn’t stop over 1500 fans pack into the 02 Academy.

Apart from a few parents keeping a discreet distance at the back, most of the audience comprised of teenage girls and the place erupted as soon as Mimi ran on stage and launched into Ghost of You.

With her debut album, Amelia, just a few weeks old, Mimi is one of the hottest British acts around.

Much of her appeal is a ‘girl next door’ image and the fact her young female fans can relate to her as well as aspire to be like her.

She sings of relationship breakdowns and the importance of believing in yourself but she also wants to party and have the time of her life, which she clearly is.

For this 70-minute set, she kept banter to a minimum apart from several reminders that people ‘hydrate’ and ‘keep drinking water’.

At one point, she and her three-piece band stopped a song to make sure the security team were dealing with an overheated fan in the middle of the dancefloor. She clearly cares deeply about her fans.

In keeping with her TikTok style, Mimi’s songs are short pop earworms rarely lasting more than three minutes.

She performed 17 songs including the encores and they came thick and fast, most generating mass singalongs and a sea of waving smartphones.

Highlights included Before I Go, Good Without, Last Train To London and Freezing. For album title track Amelia (Mimi’s real name), things slowed down with the singer sitting on the stage with her guitarist, but by the time she dusted off Red Flags and House on Fire, the fans were in a frenzy.

Mimi Webb has a great voice, all the right dance moves and an ever-growing confidence on stage.

The last time she was in Bristol she was a rising star but she’s soaring to even greater heights now.
