Bristol has more than a dozen full or overcrowded primary and secondary schools, new figures show.
The Education Policy Institute said areas with schools operating close to or over capacity see teaching staff facing additional demand. A school is at or in excess of capacity when the number of pupils enrolled is greater than or equal to its number of places.
Department for Education (DfE) figures show 17 schools were at or over capacity in Bristol in the 2021-22 academic year. Of them, eight were primary schools and nine were secondary schools. The most crowded school in the city was St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School which had 1,774 pupils and 1,530 places last year. It was over capacity by close to 16%.

St Mary Redcliffe and Temple is the most overcrowded school in Bristol. It has 1774 students enrolled with 1530 registered spots - 244 extra pupils. It is 15.9% over capacity.

2. Bristol Cathedral Choir School, College Square
Bristol Cathedral Choir School is the second most overcrowded school in Bristol. It has 1186 students enrolled with 1050 registered spots - 136 extra pupils. It is 13% over capacity.

3. Bristol Metropolitan Academy, Fishponds
Bristol Metropolitan Academy is the third most overcrowded school in Bristol. It has 1046 students enrolled with 945 registered spots - 101 extra pupils. It is 10.7% over capacity.

4. Bristol Brunel Academy, Speedwell
Bristol Brunel Academy is the fourth most overcrowded school in Bristol. It has 1268 students enrolled with 1180 registered spots - 88 extra pupils. It is 7.5% over capacity.
