Bristol is becoming increasingly unaffordable for most people on the property ladder with the average house price increasing by around 15% in the last 12 months.
It looks like the rate at which prices are rising is beginning to slow but even so, many house hunters are considering settling down in a nearby village or town. When searching for the right property price isn’t the only factor to consider, especially for those who still work in Bristol or have family and friends within the city. Transport links, things to do and the general happiness amongst the current residents are also important things to take into account.
BristolWorld has teamed up with Rightmove to select 10 of the better picks when considering moving further afield than Bristol. Using data from HM Land Registry, the estate agent has calculated the average house price in each area with material last updated in February.
The list includes small villages on the outskirts of Bristol, options across the Severn Bridge, in Wales, and locations which are just a short train journey from Bristol’s city centre - but each pick has a cheaper average property price than Bristol.
Here are 10 of the best options when looking for affordable places to live outside of Bristol:
1. Newport, £225,109
Properties in Newport had an overall average price of £225,109 over the last year. The majority of sales in Newport during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £177,975. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £229,877, with detached properties fetching £390,637. Overall, sold prices in Newport over the last year were similar to the previous year and 6% up on the 2020 peak of £213,123.
2. Weston-super-Mare, £259,273
Properties in Weston-Super-Mare had an overall average price of £259,273 over the last year. The majority of sales in Weston-Super-Mare during the last year were flats, selling for an average price of £167,549. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £285,236, with terraced properties fetching £243,754. Overall, sold prices in Weston-Super-Mare over the last year were 2% up on the previous year and 11% up on the 2020 peak of £234,560.
3. Worle, £267,652
Properties in Worle had an overall average price of £267,652 over the last year. The majority of sales in Worle during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £268,263. Detached properties sold for an average of £358,173, with terraced properties fetching £234,210. Overall, sold prices in Worle over the last year were 3% up on the previous year and 13% up on the 2020 peak of £236,044.
