Dozens of schools across Bristol are to be close or partially close tomorrow (February 1) due to strike action by teachers.

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) will hold a national walk-out in a dispute with the Department for Education over pay. They want more than the five per cent increase offered in wages.

The Government is urging school leaders to use measures like bringing in supply teachers or adopting bigger class sizes to keep schools open on the day, and reduce disruption for parents.

At Redland Green School, headteacher Ben Houghton wrote to parents and pupils last week to inform them of arrangements resulting from the planned industrial action by the NEU on February 1.

Mr Houghton says the school’s planning for the strike has been guided by ‘having to ensure the safety of students and staff whilst respecting the legitimate right of colleagues to take industrial action’.

He said: “Given that we have a large number of teachers who are NEU members and the uncertainty around staff expected in school during the strike day we have concluded that it will not be safe for us to open to all students.

“I have therefore taken the decision that the school will close to all students on Wednesday 1 February with the exception of a small number who we have invited into school on this date. We will be in contact with these parents about arrangements later on today.”

He added: “I acknowledge the disruption and inconvenience that this strike action will have on families and appreciate that this might be frustrating for you. School will re-open to all students on Thursday 2 February.”

Bristol World is updating the list of schools affected by the strike. Please email [email protected] if you are aware of any other Bristol schools planning to close on February 1.
