The major conservation project is set to run until next summer

SS Great Britain is set to get a new weather deck as part of a renovation project which is due to start next week.

Bristol-based John Perkins Construction has been appointed to replace the deck on the historic boat in Bristol Harbour, with work planned to commence on December 4 and run into next summer.

The old decking will be removed in six sections to ensure the public will still have access to the area.

SS Great Britain Trust say the major conservation project is part of ‘ongoing work to care for Brunel’s innovative ship ensuring that future generations are able to experience history’.

Mike Day, senior project manager for the SS Great Britain Trust said: “It’s a complex project that combines specialist conservation expertise with great attention to detail as 6,050 metres of new accoya deck planks will become the new “roof” for the 180-year-old SS Great Britain."

“We’re delighted to have John Perkins Construction onboard to work on the Weather Deck  replacement following a competitive tender process.”

To actually be awarded it feels a sound accomplishment and a firm endorsement of our skills with this specialist work.

“We look forward to working with the SS Great Britain Trust’s on-site team to create a seamless delivery whilst allowing visitors to gain an insight into what it takes to preserve this  historical landmark for future generations.”
