Bristol’s Southmead Hospital declared a major incident after power cut out in certain parts of the building, including the Emergency Department.

The power outage happened just after 5pm on Wednesday (July 14) in the Brunel Building.

Patients travelling to the A&E department had to be diverted while technicians scrambled to restore power at the Southmead Road hospital.

Concerns were sparked for patients but North Bristol NHS Trust staff gave reassurances that they were safe and nobody had been moved to alternative services elsewhere.

Thankfully, power was restored around four hours later at around 9pm, with the Emergency Department divert in place until 10pm before normal service resumed.

A spokesperson for the Trust said: “Thank you to our staff and system partners for their support during this time.”
