People also reported where they heard it from - in the city centre, Clifton, Redfield, Fishponds and Bradley Stoke.

One Twitter user wrote: “What the hell was with a loud bang in Bristol about an hour ago?

“Reports are of an explosion but I am unsure specifically to. And that bang sounded quite loud, but me and my family have no clue what it was.”

Another said: “Sounds of explosion/rumbling over Bristol earlier this evening. So, so odd. Sounded like artillery. Anyone hear it?”

And another said: “Sounded like an explosion - anyone know what it was?”

People also came up with suggestions as to what caused it, with some saying thunder or strong winds as Storm Arwen intensified last night.

There were also people who said it could have been caused by fireworks.
