11 postcards showing the beach resort near Bristol once compared to Blackpool

We hope these postcards sent from happy beachgoers at Severn Beach stir up fond Summer Holiday memories

Looking at Severn Beach nowadays, you would be forgiven for not knowing the place was once a thriving holiday resort packed with families who had just hopped off the train from Bristol.

The early-to-mid 20th century saw the beach in its heyday, complete with its pleasure grounds, funfair, bathing pools and chalets. The pre and post-war decades brought packed crowds after a railway was built linking the beach to Bristol and London in 1922 - its popularity began to fizzle out in the following decades. Today, it’s often referred to as Severn-on-the-Mud.

Using Bristol Archives, we have selected 11 postcards depicting Severn Beach in its heyday. These were posted to family and friends by happy beachgoers showing their days out, we hope they bring back memories of happy summer holidays.
