It has long been a favourite staycation resort for people in Bristol and now Weymouth has been named 'beach of the year'.

The popular Dorset resort, which has regular direct trains to and from Bristol, scooped the top spot in The Times and Sunday Times Best UK Beaches 2023 Top 50.

The Dorset beach had three times the number of nominations of its nearest rival, Woolacombe in Devon, and more recommendations than all the beaches in the southeast and southwest combined.

The Times and Sunday Times describe Weymouth as 'a true champion of the British seaside' and say the beach is 'close to perfect'.

It adds that the Georgian esplanade is'the most beautiful backdrop to any urban beach in the country and the facilities, from the sparkling superloos on the prom to the beach wheelchairs, deckchairs, windbreaks and ocean toys, are matched by no other resort in the land'.

Other reasons why Weymouth won the accolade include the donkeys, Punch and Judy shows, sand sculptures and the wonderful Rossi’s ice cream, which has been served from the same seafront spot since 1937.
