A member of the public was concerned for the welfare of the dogs and called the police who arrived at about 8.15am.

Bristol is currently sweltering in a heatwave, and it would already have been about 20C at that time.

The two dogs are believed to be around six months old. One is white, the other fawn.

They’re currently being cared for at a local police station while officers make enquiries to trace the owner before they are handed to the city’s animal rescue centre.

The car officers found on Redcliffe Parade was found to be on false plates and registered as off-road by the last keeper, from Aberdare.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who saw or has dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage of someone leaving a red Ford Focus in Redcliffe yesterday (August 10), or recognises the dogs or can prove they are their owner.

If you can help, call 101 and give the reference 5222192300.
