Bristol Riots: 24 sad images as shops close and board up in Old Market amidst rumours of right-wing protests

Businesses across Bristol’s Old Market have boarded up their shops amidst rumour of further right-wing demonstrations in the city.

Unconfirmed posts have been circulating online since Monday claiming anti-immigration protestors are organising more rallies in as many as up to 20 English towns today (August 7).

It follows after disruptions were caused in Bristol City Centre after hundreds of far-right and anti-immigrant protestors and a counter group gathered for two protests near Castle Park on Saturday (August 3).

17 arrests were made following the incident and three have been charged so far.

Deputy Chief Constable Jon Reilley from Avon and Somerset Police said: “We’re aware of posts circulating online calling for people to gather in Bristol night and I want to reassure you we’ll have significant resources in place to maintain order and keep people safe.”

However, businesses and community groups across Old Market appear not to be taking chances and have boarded up their shops in preparation of any potential disruptions breaking out tonight.

On their Instagram stories, The Gossip Nail Bar posted: “It’s a sad world we live in when we have to close and board up for fear of our own safety because a bunch of uneducated white thugs chose hate over love and acceptance.”

Good Store Studio announced they will be closing early today. On Instagram they said “Due to planned far right action in Old Market today we will be closing at 2pm today.

“Our windows are currently being boarded up to protect the business, something we feel incredibly sad that we’re having to do.”

Old Market Barber, Ome, Bodkin Bakes (from noon) have also closed for the day due to the potential protests.
