Local communities of Barton Hill, Redfield and St George have until tomorrow (20th February) to share their views on the ‘East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood’ consultation.

The proposal aims to achieve a better balance of how streets are used by residents and motorists by introducing traffic management interventions, including bus gates, modal filters/point closures and one-ways, to prevent motorised traffic from taking shortcuts through residential streets and allow people to walk, cycle and wheel through the different interventions.

Measures include the introduction of one-way roads in a northerly direction in Cobden Street and a southerly direction in Morton Street, the removal of one-way traffic in Barnes Street, Cobden Street (south of Morley Street/Victoria Avenue), Ducie Road, Glebe Road, Grindell Road and Wicket Lane and the removal of the contraflow cycle lane in Cobden Street (south of Victoria Avenue).

As well as, a new section of prohibition of driving on Victoria Avenue between its junctions with Byron Street and Morse Road, a loading place in Barnes Street and the removal of the restriction of waiting arrangements for vehicles in lengths of Cossham Road, Ebenezer Street, Salisbury Street and Sherbourne Street.

The overall aim of East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood is to reduce motorised traffic, air pollution, noise pollution and road accidents and create quieter and safer streets where residents may feel more comfortable walking, cycling or wheeling when making local journeys - encouraging more people to leave their car at home.

Drivers would still have easy access to all homes and businesses by entering and exiting from main distributor roads, and lower traffic volumes and exemptions through the Liveable Neighbourhood bus gates will make it easier and quicker for emergency services to reach their destinations.

More details on the proposal, including translations in Arabic, Pashto, Polish, Somali and Urdu, as well as the consultation survey, can be found here.
