The owners of a popular Bristol pub have issued an update about reopening following its shock closure.

The Sugar Loaf closed its doors last Thursday (January 4) after the departure of its landlord.

Martin Donlin, who had run the pub on St Mark’s Road in Easton since 2018, said he shut the pub due to rising costs and deteriorating health.

But in a statement to BristolWorld, pub owners Star Pub & Bars (a subsidiary of Heineken) said they hope to reopen it ‘as soon as possible'.

A spokesperson for Star Pubs & Bars said: “We want our pubs to succeed and thrive and to that end we offer an extensive range of support to the independent licensees who lease them.

“Where there are issues, we provide additional guidance and financial help. We do not discuss licensees’ individual business arrangements so are unable to provide more specific information regarding the situation at The Sugar Loaf.

“The Sugar Loaf is a very popular pub and we are working to reopen it as soon as possible.”

The Sugar Loaf has previously been dubbed the “last working-class” pub in Easton and went viral in 2022 for its hugely generous cheese and onion rolls.
