A popular Bristol fabric shop is set to close, with the premises put up for sale as a redevelopment opportunity.

Plans have been submitted to turn the Calico & Co site on Bedminster Parade in Bedminster into nine flats and a new shop on the ground floor.

But the long-running fabric shop will not be part of redevelopment, with the reasons for this unclear.

Calico & Co declined to comment on the closure.

The property listing for the two-storey building says it will be sold with vacant possession.

Plans to redevelop the site were submitted by Russell Williams Textiles to the council in June last year, with a decision still pending.

The proposals include three 1-bed, four 2-bed and two 3-bed flats in a new three-storey building. The ground floor will also include a new retail space fronting onto Bedminster Parade.

Calico & Co was established 40 years ago and is an independent family-run business with two shops.

The shop, which has a second site in Cardiff, says it is the largest stockist of fabric on the roll in Wales and the South West.

The closure of Calico & Co follows that of The Nylon Shop, a fabric shop in Kingswood closing after 65 years.
