A woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving following the death of a lady in her 70s, on Saturday (September 24).

The victim, who has not yet been named, was struck by the driver of a vehicle in Dukes Mead, Bridgwater, on Friday afternoon and left on the side of the road to be found by passers-by who called for help.

She was airlifted to Southmead Hospital before succumbing to her injuries the next day.

Avon and Somerset Police has confirmed a 54-year-old woman was arrested late last night on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.

She has since been released under investigation while further enquiries take place.

A vehicle has also been seized and will be forensically examined as part of our inquiry.
