A new post office will be an integral part of a new Premier food store opening in Stockwood.

The news comes 16 months after the controversial closure of the old Stockwood branch of the Post Office.

The former branch was located within the McColl’s store on Hollway Road and was one of the five Bristol McColl’s shops closed by owners Morrisons, which shut 132 unprofitable stores nationwide. The Stockwood Post Office and McColl’s shop closed in January 2023.

Aside from Stockwood, the McColl’s stores that closed included Stapleton, Bedminster and Cribbs Causeway. The company identified them as ‘loss-making for some time’.

Since the closure, the nearest Post Office branches for Stockwood residents have been Keynsham or Broadwalk Shopping Centre on Wells Road. There is also a Post Office at the McColl’s on The Square in Knowle Park.

But work is now under way for a new Premier food store to replace the old McColl’s and a new Post Office will be created within the store.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We have an applicant who wants to re-open Stockwood Post Office. This is at an early stage of the application and there are different stages of the recruitment process that need to be completed before we can share further details with the community.”

Stockwood Ward Conservative Councillors Jon Hucker and Graham Morris said they are delighted to hear the news that Stockwood is to get its Post Office back as well as a new convenience store.

Mr Morris said: “We have kept in regular contact with the Post Office during the void period and know there was a previous withdrawn application.

“The return of the Post Office and the new shop will give a much needed boost to the shopping area and will complement the return of Stockwood Market and the significant investment of over £200,000 into the public realm from the library to the square which should be completed by Christmas.”

There is no confirmed opening date for the store or Post Office.
