Legendary gig-goer and artist Jeff Johns, better known as Big Jeff, has regained consciousness and is making ‘some good progress’ after being seriously injured in a house fire, his family have said.

Big Jeff was badly burnt in the fire while cooking at his Totterdown home on June 6, and has since been undergoing treatment at a specialist burns unit in Swansea.

But over the weekend the 39-year-old finally regained consciousness, is off the ventilator and is making some good progress, his family have said after issuing an update on his condition.

“Jeff is beginning to be able to receive the wonderful messages of love, support and goodwill - thank you,” they added.

“His condition still remains very serious and we ask you all to continue to keep Jeff in your thoughts.”

Big Jeff has been a popular fixture at Bristol gigs for decades and is so well known that top bands wished him well during their sets at Glastonbury and Bristol Sounds.

Also a talented painter, he launched his Welcome to My World exhibition in 2021 which featured 34 artworks aimed at challenging perceptions of his anxiety.
