The tunnel has been sealed off for decades

The idea of building an underground system for Bristol surprised a few people when it was first proposed. But, the city already has underground rail routes lurking beneath our city centre streets, abandoned decades ago.

The Redcliffe Tunnel is a 282 yard long stretch with its entrance off Lower Guinea Street. It was used as part of the Harbourside Railway, which opened in 1872 before it was closed in 1964. Its construction involved the demolition of a nearby vicarage and the removal and re-internment of a graveyard at Arnos Vale cemetery.

Urban explorer, The Secret Vault has investigated the lost railway tunnel, creeping through its doors to survey the cavern. While doing so, he snapped some pictures which BristolWorld has been allowed to share below:
