It is the end of an era as Bristol’s longest-serving pub landlady retired on Tuesday (August 8) - 40 years and four days after she pulled her first pint at the establishment.
Constance Higgins, known as Patsy to everyone in Montpelier, took over The Beaufort, a cosy pub tucked in York Road, near Picton Street, on August 4, 1983 with her late husband, Delroy “Garth” Higgins.
The pub is filled with nostalgia with a juke box which has been there since she took over, old photographs dotted around the walls and a classic-style bar area.
“Thank you to all my local and less local customers who have supported this establishment, “ Patsy shared on the pub’s Facebook page.
“Since Garth died 16 years ago I have managed the pub on my own. It’s a sad time for me, but after 40 years I know it’s the right time to retire.
“I have met so many great people and have numerous, wonderful memories of you all. I’ve also really appreciated those visitors who left Bristol many years ago and still pop in! Thank you again to all of you who have been loyal and friendly customers.”
