A community pub in central Bristol has been saved from redevelopment into flats by the landlord of one of the city’s best-known boozers.

Sam Gregory of The Bank Tavern in the Old City area of Bristol has bought The Crown Tavern in St Jude’s, which closed its doors earlier this year when octogenarian landlords Dominic and Gloria O’Connor decided to call it a day after 30 years of running the pub.

A Victorian pub that was once used for St Jude’s Boxing Club, it was well known for its draught Bass as well as its darts teams.

The new owner says the refurbishment of the building will cost in the region of £1m and will include turning upstairs rooms into private dining areas.

Posting the news on social media, Sam said: “We’re incredibly honoured to be taking helm of The Crown Tavern in St. Judes. A cracking boozer at the heart of the community.

“After spending lots of time with landlords Dominic and Gloria O’Connor this year, we feel immensely proud to have the opportunity to restore this beautiful pub whilst keeping the heart of it being about people - something that Dominic and Gloria have always been about.

"We can’t wait to welcome them both back in to sit and enjoy a pint of Bass once we’re up and running.”

Sam says the work starts in January and he hopes the front bar will be back open as early as February.
