The Colosseum has been taken over by a successful local team

One of Bristol’s most iconic 1960s-built pubs will reopen next month after a major refurbishment under new owners.

The Colosseum in Redcliffe closed in June 2023 and was bought by the team behind the Mothers’ Ruin and The Crown in St Nicholas Market.

Built in 1968, the pub is regarded as a fine example of the ‘Brutalist’ architecture of the time.

Despite being on busy Redcliff Hill and centrally located, the large landmark pub had become somewhat of a forgotten destination over the years.

When it went on the market, the team behind The Mothers’ Ruin and The Crown bought it before it could be turned into flats, like so many Bristol pubs and venues have been over in recent years.

New owner Marc Griffiths said: “The vision was clear from day one - keep the iconic, Brutalist aesthetic, but make it a place for all to enjoy.

“Whether you want a cool, crisp pint after work, a round of premium cocktails late at night, or a selection of Mediterranean inspired small plates to pick and share - we’ve got you covered.

“It’s amazing to me that this space has been forgotten - it’s only five minutes from town, five minutes the other way to Bedminster, and ten minutes from Temple Meads - it’s the perfect spot for a drink, and anyone can get to it.”

The new-look Colosseum opens on February 3.
