I tried the new dish at Honest Burgers and it was the best Bristol burger I’ve had this year

The new limited edition burger has its roots in sunny California

For its latest limited edition burger, Honest Burgers has looked to sunny California for inspiration.

The burger is on the menu at Bristol’s Clare Street branch of the chain until June 3 and already proving a hit with the customers.

Honest Burgers is well known for its high quality ingredients including beef from Gloucestershire farms and freshly prepared rosemary salted chips rather than the usual frozen jobs.

At its busy Bristol restaurant, there’s a ‘Bristol’ burger featuring Somerset cheese, Bristol beers, Cornish ciders and frozen cocktails from nearby Brozen.

With its reclaimed wood, ribbed glass partitions, oversize lightbulbs and whitewashed exposed brickwork, the Clare Street site has an industrial look and there are high stools in the back window overlooking the nearby church.

At £15.30, the California burger is at the higher end when it comes to burgers but they are in a very different league compared to most high street versions.

And this limited edition dish is also a smashed burger - they are cooked on a high heat to get a proper sear on the outside which keeps those meaty juices locked in, and the chefs also add some French’s mustard as they are being fried, to enhance the flavour.

The California is a serious and generous burger with two smashed beef patties, bacon, American mustard, double American cheese, grilled onions, brown butter burger sauce, tomato, lettuce and pickles.

They are served with Honest Burgers’ trademark rosemary salted chips, which are included in the price and adds to the value.

And, yes, these are pretty ‘dirty’ burgers. As soon as I bit into it, the meaty, mustardy juices trickled down my hand and onto my trousers. Don’t wear your best new clothes if you think you’ll end up here or you may end up with a trip to the dry cleaners.

But it was absolutely delicious, with a properly beefy flavour, gentle spice from the mustard, lots of oozy, melty cheese and crunch and bite from the pickles and lettuce.

It was simply the best Bristol burger so far this year and I hope to get back to try it again before it is taken off the menu on June 3. I urge you to do the same.
