St Nicholas Market in the heart of Bristol is very much a city centre food quarter. It’s also home to Matina, a food stall famous for its wraps and the best-rated Middle Eastern takeaway in town.

The stall has an open kitchen so you can watch chefs cook your meal in front of your eyes. They even make the naan breads for the wraps from scratch, which is fascinating to watch.

Matina has a couple of tables next to the kitchen so you can enjoy your meal in the market although close proximity to Castle Park means a lot of customers head across the road to eat their food when the weather allows.

Despite there often being a lengthy queue at lunchtime, Matina has a fast turnaround with the wrap being ready within 5-10 minutes. The staff are really friendly and I was given the choice of adding up to four sauces and a selection of fresh vegetables to the wrap.

Although there are plenty of meat options, I decided to try the halloumi grilled vegetables wrap. It was well put together and did not fall apart at all as I walked to a suitable location to eat it.

The wrap was warm, and from the first bite, I could taste the spice and the tender vegetables which felt just on point. The naan was soft and fluffy, and the halloumi was just chewy enough. The textures complemented each other in the colourful dish.

The wrap was very full with a good balance of cheese and a selection of vegetables. As I made my way through the wrap, I spotted some crunchy cucumber and red onion, some lettuce and beetroot, to name a few. It was delicious and very filling.

The only downside of the wrap is that the bottom of the naan becomes soggy after a while, meaning the dish has to be eaten there and then so there’s no leftovers for later. Unless you enjoy a soggy naan that is.
