I tried the Full English breakfast at the Bristol greasy spoon that also hosts Greek nights

Sandwiched between a vape store and chip shop, the Riverside Cafe doesn’t have the most exotic spot. But what it lacks in glamorous location, it more than makes up for when it comes to continental breakfast options.

For those traditionalists with elasticated waistbands, there’s the ‘Ultimate’ breakfast (£11.50) comprising two rashers of bacon, two sausages, two hash browns, two eggs, beans, mushrooms, sauté potatoes, tomatoes, black pudding, bubble and squeak and toast.

At the cheaper end of the scale, there’s egg on toast for £3 and bacon sandwiches for £4.

I went for the well-priced ‘special set’ breakfast - £7.50 for two decent size rashers of bacon, one sausage, one fried egg, beans, generously buttered toast and tomato.

OK, the sausage was a tad dry and a touch gristly but the bacon was excellent and the fried egg boasted a perfectly runny egg.

Full English purists might choke on their mug of builders tea at the two warmed slices of fresh beef tomato, rather than the usual tinned jobs or fried half tomato.

Closer examination of the comprehensive lamented menus reveals a number of dishes you don’t often spot in a greasy spoon cafe.

There’s a houmous salad bowl with olives and pitta bread, ratatouille jacket potatoes, pate with garlic bread and squid rings with chips, peas or beans.

But then you spot stiffado beef slow-cooked in onions and red wine, Greek salad and hot halloumi sandwiches, and you realise this traditional English cafe has a strong Grecian influence.

Not only that, once a month the Riverside Cafe puts away the breakfast menu and runs a Greek mezze night with traditional food like stuffed vine leaves, courgette and mine, and pork and chicken souvlaki.

As well as authentic Greek food, the mezze nights feature live acoustic music, although I’m not sure whether or not staff indulge in the traditional plate smashing.

But then with costs and prices rising in most cafes (the cheese jacket potato here is £6.90 and the omelette and beans is a punchy £9.50 although that does include tea or coffee), perhaps even Greek plate smashing has felt the impact of the cost of living crisis.
