I tried the burger joint tucked away on a Bristol industrial estate and it was a revelation

The Crown Industrial Estate in Warmley is home to various businesses including scaffolders, waste handlers, vehicle repair workshops and sand and gravel suppliers.

More surprising, perhaps, is the fact it’s also home to one of the best burger joints in the Bristol area.

Occupying a small unit near the entrance to the industrial estate, Phat Burger was started in Paulton by Matt Day during lockdown and it moved to its current Warmley site two and a half years ago.

In keeping with its lockdown launch, the business is still heavily reliant on deliveries but there is a steady eat-in trade, too.

In the morning, Phat Burger serves a range of breakfasts, which Matt says do well with ‘men in vans’. The substantial Full English is a bargain at £8 and they also serve a smaller ‘Half English' (£5) and a huge ‘Royal Britannia’ for £13.

Due to its out of the way location, lunchtimes can be on the quiet side, says Matt, but most of the trade is in the evening, both for ‘eat in’ and deliveries.

As well as a range of beef burgers, the menu features chicken dishes and vegan options. Best-sellers include the Mother Clucker (fried chicken, smoked cheddar, fried egg and bbq sauce) and the You Porker! (A beef patty, pulled pork, hash browns and Korean BBQ sauce).

As well as cold cans of soft drinks, there are made-to-order shakes for £4 - these include Oreo, Biscoff, Milky Bar and Mint Aero.

I went for the most popular burger on the menu - the Double American Smash (£11). Inside the soft, sweet bun, there were two thin but juicy beef patties, a generous amount of molten American cheese, tangy American mustard, ketchup, gherkins and crispy onion.

The fries (£3) were greaseless, generously salted and crunchy on the outside.

It was a gloriously messy lunch - a four paper napkin job - and the juices and sauces from the burger dripped down my hands and onto the white enamel camping plate, but it was a delicious and winning combination.

In short, it was the best burger I’ve had in Bristol all year and well worth the detour.

Phat Burger has also just launched its festive burger, which sounds well worth checking out. The Santa’s Burger costs £13 and includes a beef burger, pulled turkey, pork and apple stuffing, cranberry sauce, pig in blanket and gravy dip).

You can even wash it down with a mince pie-flavoured shake.

From November 27, Phat Burger is extending its opening hours and will be open seven days a week. Now, there’s no excuse not to enjoy a ‘Phat’ Christmas.
