I don't care that my successful oven cleaning business is boring, we clean 11,000 cookers a year and I love it
Forget unicorns, fintech ‘disruptors’, billion pound IPOs and firms with dreams of listing on the FTSE.
Meet the businesses who are happy to stay small, the directors who run businesses that, even they admit, are as dull as dishwater. But these business owners are happy, manage to pay the bills and love their work/life balance.

Welcome to real Britain: a country where scale doesn't matter, but is often scoffed at — and where's there's no risk of venture capital-backed ‘burn rates’ resulting in burnout.
While the tech world chases billion-pound valuations, these entrepreneurs are happily plodding along with jobs many would consider mind-numbingly dull – cleaning ovens, ironing clothes, writing CVs and making stained glass. And they say they’re happier, healthier and more in control of their lives as a result.
They’re the quietly content business owners the media usually ignores – because they’re not building empires, scaling fast or trying to be the next Zuck, Bezos or Musk, working from dawn to dusk. But they are, in their own words, living better lives by embracing the mundane.
Grease-scrubbing Graham Rogers in Bristol
If cleaning ovens sounds like one of the dullest jobs imaginable, Graham Rogers would agree – on the surface, at least. But the founder of OvenGleamers says there’s serious sparkle under the grime.
His South West-based franchise network has been scrubbing grease for over 20 years, and now supports dozens of franchisees, many of whom left corporate life to get off the hamster wheel. It’s not about scale, disruption or investors – just a proven business model, national marketing, and the backing of a dedicated bookings team that lets people be their own boss without going it alone.
What’s more, according to Graham, customers love the gleam and franchisees love the freedom. Dull? “Only if you ignore the life satisfaction that comes with it”, says Rogers. Oven cleaning might sound ‘dull as dishwater,’ but OvenGleamers proves it’s anything but - this premium, family-run business has been transforming greasy ovens—and lives—for over two decades.

With a growing team and head office support, OvenGleamers not only provides professional oven cleaning but also creates local jobs and franchise opportunities across the UK, many of which come from corporate backgrounds and which choose OvenGleamers for its proven model, national marketing, and dedicated bookings team—giving them the freedom to be their own boss without going it alone.
From ovens and hobs to barbecues and extractors, customers love the gleam. And franchisees love the life change. So yes, it might be “dull as dishwater” on the surface. But scratch that surface—and you’ll find a business built on sparkle, satisfaction, and serious potential.
11,000 cookers cleaned a year
Ex RAF Technician and IT Consultant Graham Rogers started as single man in a van oven cleaner back in 2004, with the business growing to 5 vans within 18 months and now has 7 soon to be 9. They also boast a growing network of 20 franchisees across the UK.
Graham attributes the success to being the first oven cleaning company to embrace Google Advertising and meeting his wife with a month of starting the business - apparently, her telephone sales skills converted the Google leads and led to the businesses growth.
Since then the business has flourished one oven gleam at a time, with the company cleaning in excess of 4,000 cookers a year and the franchise network cleaning a further 11,000 per year.
Graham started this business with a passion for cleaning Aga range cookers and the company became known as specialists in experts in cleaning large range cookers and heat storage cookers, so much so that, in 2023, OvenGleamers was invited by the prestigious Everhot company to become the recommended oven cleaning company for Everhot's customers.
Since then OvenGleamers own employees and the franchise network have gleamed 100s of these beautiful high end heat storage cookers.
