HSBC has announced it will close 144 branches across the UK as customers opt for online banking - with three branches in Bristol for the chop

HSBC has confirmed it will close 114 of its branches across the UK from April 2023 - and three Bristol stores are on the list. The banking giant said customers using its branches have “fallen significantly” since the pandemic.

Around 100 jobs are set to be axed as a result of the move, although the bank said it would try to relocate staff where it could. It comes after HSBC already closed hundreds of branches in recent years as lenders cut costs and more people transition to online banking.

A total of 327 branches will remain in the UK after the latest cull, and HSBC said it would invest tens of millions “updating and improving” them for customers.

Jackie Uhi, its managing director of UK distribution, said: "People are changing the way they bank and footfall in many branches is at an all-time low, with no signs of it returning.Banking remotely is becoming the norm for the vast majority of us."

Ms Uhi said that the decision to close a branch was "never easy or taken lightly", especially if it is the last branch in an area. She added that HSBC was investing in "post-closure" measures such as providing free tablet devices to help branch customers bank digitally.
