Several sites - some well-known, some not so - across Bristol feature in this year’s Heritage at Risk Register published by Historic England. The Register is a summary of the critical health of some of England’s most historic landmarks.
Some are earmarked for repairs, but others face the threat of nearby developments, or simply being left to waste. Duncan Wilson, chief executive of Historic England said: “As the threat of climate change grows, the reuse and sensitive upgrading of historic buildings and places becomes ever more important.
“Finding new uses for buildings and sites rescued from the Register avoids the high carbon emissions associated with demolishing structures and building new.”

5. Civil War earthworks on Brandon Hill
Deteriorating civil war defences - in need of management, says Historic England.
6. Church of St Mary the Virgin, Henbury
13th Century church with 19th Century restoration and an interesting array of tombs and monuments, some listed in their own right. Roof coverings and rainwater goods are all in poor condition and there is vegetation growing out of the eroding masonry. Areas of mortar erosion and cement render are in need of replacement. This building has been subject to heritage crime.
7. Whitfield Tabernacle, Park Road, Kingswood
Former chapel, built in 1741. The building has been redundant for many years and a fire has placed the building in an even more vulnerable position. In 2020 Historic England grant-aided a programme of emergency repairs and consolidation has now been completed. A programme of full repairs and conversion to the newly identified community and arts use is now underway.
8. Church of All Hallows, Easton
Large Decorated Gothic Revival church of 20th Century by Bristol architect Sir George Oatley. A National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England Repair Grant for Places of Worship was accepted in 2012 for surface water drainage works and structural repairs. Repairs completed 2014. Some roofing and drainage issues have yet to be addressed.
