Historic Bristol social club warns it could close after almost 50 years
A long-running social club in Bristol which describes itself as a “pivotal part” of the local community has warned it is at risk of closure.
The Whitchurch Folk House says it might have to close its doors by the end of summer unless it attracts more regular visitors.

Hide AdThe venue, which first opened on East Dundry Road in Whitchurch in 1977, says it is now at a “crossroads”.
Garion Chaffe wrote in Whitchurch Folk House’s Facebook group: “As valued members, you’ve celebrated milestones, enjoyed countless events, and shared many a pint within our walls.
“Unfortunately, all of this is now at risk, and we need your help to change that.
“Despite our best efforts and your support at our events, we face an ongoing challenge.

Hide Ad“The reality is stark: without a boost in regular visits, we might have to close our doors by the end of summer.”


He added: “During the last membership renewal window, we shared some of the financial challenges we faced with all of you, hoping that circumstances would improve. Despite all our efforts, we've now reached crunch time.
“We need a significant and sustained increase in visits—outside our event nights—to secure our future.
“This is no longer about weathering a storm; it's about ensuring the survival of the Whitchurch Folk House.”

Hide AdThe Whitchurch Folk House was first formed in 1977, after residents secured a lease from Bristol City Council for the Bridge Farm House building, which is more than 200 years old and Grade II-listed.
The club has arranged an open meeting on its future tomorrow evening (May 8), from 7.30pm.
