While new openings have been popping up all over Bristol, the city has already lost a number of well known and beloved cafes, restaurants, pubs and mini-golf courses.
Here are 6 venues we’ve sadly lost for good in 2024 so far - with two more set to close in the coming months:
1. Filwood Crazy Golf in Knowle West
On January 23, the nine-hole course in Filwood Community Centre's courtyard closed after two and a half years. In a statement on social media, Filwood Crazy Golf said: “We are sad to announce the closure of our much-loved crazy golf. It served us many years but in the end it succumbed to the weather so for health and safety we have had to close. We will reuse what we can where we can though so don't worry!”
2. The Faraway Tree in Redfield
The Faraway Tree closed their doors on January 29. On a Facebook post they said: We are closed forever. Thanks so much for all the love and support over the years! You made the faraway tree a special place."
3. Lisa's Chocolate in Cheltenham Road
The chocolate store closed on January 31 and became an online-only store based in Mallorca after people's shopping habits changed since the pandemic. Lisa told BristolWorld: “I remember this road being like a river of people when I first moved to Bristol, whereas now, it's just very quiet. As a retail shop, with all the expenses that come with it, it's a lot harder to make it a profitable business on a daily basis, especially with chocolate being a seasonal product. You either have to have a very good Christmas or be constantly pushing really hard. Which used to be okay. But the older I get, the more I think there might be other ways. Online, you can reach customers globally and you can really focus on making chocolates rather than retailing them. What I love is creating products and coming up with ideas trying to give people things that they've never seen before.” Photo: Google
4. G Brothers Pizza on Albion Road
On March 12, the Easton pizzeria announced its closure the day after receiving a hygiene emergency prohibition notice. In an Instagram post, the pizzeria wrote: : “I'm so sorry to say I think this is the end for G Brothers Pizza. The pest control problem which we're still struggling to get on top of has put the final nail in our coffin. Thank you so much to our wonderful staff and customers who have supported us over the years - the place will reopen under new management”. Photo: google
