Patient satisfaction with GP surgeries has slumped considerably in the past year across England, results of the NHS survey show. Of those who responded, 72% said they had a good overall experience, down from 83% last year and 82% the year before.

The survey contacted 2.5 million people between 10 January and 11 April this year. Just under 720,000 forms were returned, representing a 29% response rate.

A spokesperson for NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB, said: “We welcome this valuable feedback on local GP services, and are pleased to see results across our area are above the national average for people’s overall experience, the helpfulness of receptionists, and the choice of appointments available to local people.

“More than 5.5m appointments were carried out in GP practices in BNSSG during 2021; with 442,207 appointments carried out in June 2022 alone. General practice is changing. Practices are working hard to make sure everyone can access the right support when they need it; whether that’s online or face-to-face.

“The GP surgery team is growing and patients may be offered an appointment with a specialist such as an advanced nurse practitioner, physiotherapist, or clinical pharmacist rather than a GP. Our local campaign ‘Your GP surgery team cares for you’ highlights some of the innovation happening in our area.

“However, we also recognise there are some areas for improvement. We are continuing to share learning between practices about what works well, and are working to support practices to deliver high-quality services to patients.”
